Sundarar -2 TirutoNdat Tokai ---- ¾¢Õò¦¾¡ñ¼ò ¦¾¡¨¸
If Appar revolutionized metaphysical thinking of the ancient Tamils with his magnificent MaRu maaRRu TiruttaaNdakam, and Sambantar did the same with his KooLaRu Tiruppatikam , Sundarar the third among Teevaara MutalikaL did something similar with his Truttondat Tokai, which was sung, as the history goes, with divine inspiration. For though the intention to sing the glories of the adiyaars was already there in his mind, he was not sure how to begin it. It is at this point that Civa the BEING is said to have given the first line " Tillai vaaz antaNar tam adiyaarkkum adiyeen".
Historically this patikam seems to have played a greater role than the other revolutionary patikams for after similar verses sung by Nambi ANdaar NambikaL and so forth, it inspired the Great Ceekizaar to compose the Epic Periyapuraanam itself perhaps around the 12th cent and which in turn gave rise to the writings of hundreds of PuraNas including TiruviLaiyaadal PuraNam, Kanta PuraaNam TaNikai PuraNam and a host of other Tala puranaas..
But Periya PuraNam stands unique for the heroes sung are NOT kings and warriors as in Mahabaratam, or the Tiirttangkaras as in the Jaina tradition or the even the non historical and mythological figures as in RamayaNa , Kanta PuranaM and so forth. but rather ordinary people from all walks of life.
The adiyaars sung were humble people who really lived as ordinary mortals but who distinguished themselves by their service to society , i.e. ToNdars and who came from who came with different professional backgrounds thus cutting across caste distinctions.. It was then a REVOLUTION in thinking where now it was understood that Divine Blessings are FREELY available to ALL and that in this there are NO PRIVILEGED individuals. Thus it was a frontal attack on caste system especially Varnasrama Dharma that sought to claim a privileged position to the Brahmanahs and along with it to Sanskrit as much as it was blow to Jainism and Buddhism that set up only the Great Warriors - the Tiirtankaras and BothiSattvaas as worthy of being sung as heroes of epic tales.
I am glad to re-circulate this important patikam as a way of recovering the spirit of Tondu back to where it belongs and the fact that in metaphysical life all are equal, there are NO specially privileged individuals either by birth or profession.
I shall provide only the meanings to begin with, the commentaries will follow later .

I am in service to all those philosophers who remain steadfast in their search for TRUTH and never ever become a slave to falsities; I am in service to Pukaz Coozar who died fighting in Karuvuur full of gardens; also in service to Narasinga Munaiyaraiayar, who was true servant of God; also in service to Atipattar of Naakai encircled by the sea of great waves; also in service to Kalikkamban Kaliyan KazaRsatti who would chop of the arms of the offenders against Civa and to those in service to him; also in service to AiyadikaL , the Kaadavarkoon ( a Pallava King) and to all those in service to him; I , who is in eternal bondage to the BEING of Uncanny World who has disclosed Himself as the Great One in Aruur.
Notes:
One of the most arresting phrase in the whole Theevaram Corpus is this phrase" poyyadimai illaap pulavar' that rightly became often quoted phrase by many scholars. With the use of this descriptive term Sundarar reaches the universal ground that transcends time and place. Saivism is centered not on dogmas, creeds and practices but rather on the attitude of SEARCHING for TRUTH and living in it and which demands that one remains always steadfast in the search for TRUTH and thus avoid falling into illusions and delusions.
Sundarar says that he is service to all such individuals and which also means that they are too taken as Saivites.

I am in service to KaNampulla Nambi and Kaari who believed that the real security is the divine feet of Civa who disclosed Himself as the Blue-Throated by swallowing the poison of world destruction and held it in his throat disclosing that HE is the real Savior; I am also in service even to those in service to NinRaciir NedumaRan who won the battle in ThiruNeveeLi all because of his faultless good-heartedness; I am in service also to those who are in service to the one at the gates of the ancient Mayilai where appeared Civa as the resplendent red coral of good quality to disclose that only He can dispel the Ignorance of people; I am also in service to Velnambi Munaiyaaduvar who was fearless and who cut to pieces the enemies; I , who is in eternal bondage to the BEING of Uncanny World who has disclosed Himself as the Great One in Aruur.
