The Metatheism of Sambantar

Hinduism in general seems to uphold what can be called Metatheism as its basic metaphysical presupposition and which links it up with the pyramidal cultures of the world particularly the Nubian-Egyptian-Sumerian cultures. This aspect not only has NOT highlighted but also submerged by numerous Vedic missionaries including a number of European Indologists who try to get a foothold as founders of human civilization by obscuring the fact they were very late comers into Human Civilization but certainly, despite this, with great contributions of their own. The underlying cultural impulses of Europeans are that which have led to development of positive sciences along with marvels in technological developments. But this success with the physical sciences is not without a cost - pushed to the background are the Hermeneutic Sciences and hence a virtual absence of Human Sciences and hence also false metaphysics of all kinds.

It is here that the Dravidian cultural traditions come to the picture. Starting from the primordial cultural impulses of the Nubian- Egyptian-Sumerian pyro cultures, they have developed a variety of Human Sciences as Hermeneutic Sciences (HS) and which are MORE inclusive than the physical. While the HS can incorporate the Physical Sciences without any damage to its essence, the Physical Sciences cannot do that. The deconstruction of the physical sciences and transforming them into HS will be struggle of the present and the future and in which the victory of HS is assured. It is in connection with this that the Tamil literature has a peculiar importance for world culture as a whole.

While religious dimensions can be captured by the word Metatheism of which Monotheism and Polytheism are corruptions, there are also some other disciplines that come along with it. The Metatheism presupposes the Metaphysical Pyramid as the Unconscious that conditions the basic cultural impulses and which at one stage man realized by building huge pyramids, and pyramidal temples. However the real development began and Sumerian Temple Hymns are an evidence for this, when they saw the Pyramid to be populated with gods high and low and with which began Icon Thinking, the deep investigatory meditations about the MEANINGS these gods encrypted into their form and functions. This gave birth to the science of Hermeneutic Semiotics that is concerned with gaining metaphysical illuminations that would DESTROY the inner darkness and with that enable man ASCEND the Pyramid reach the Peak and wait for BEING to bless the soul with life beyond.

Temple hymns in Sumerian times were exercises in this Hermeneutic Semiotics. This tradition did not die out with the Dravidians who are descendents of these Sumerians developing this culture to great heights during the Bakti period (5th- 9thcnet AD) and so forth.

The following Patikam of Sambantar has a peculiar importance for he is concerned here with the Philosophy of Icon Thinking as such and goes beyond the Icon Thinking of the Sumerian en Hudu Anna(c. 2300 BC) and Punitavati (5th cent AD)

I hope the readers can see the importance of this Patikam as a philosophy of Metatheism that is the religious impulse of Nubian-Egyptian-Sumerian pyro cultures and the important bearing it has for bringing forth aspects of the scientific rationality of the human mind itself that have not been highlighted.

Note: I have taken the liberty to post this series also to Ta_Seti egroups to alert the members there the relevance of Metatheism of the Dravidian folks to understand the essential dynamics of the African cultures to which Dravidian is also linked (as it is to the Chinese and Japanese and so forth)

Ө 3:25 :

Icon Thinking Provides the Cure of the Soul

The religious life cannot be divorced from Depth Psychology that is concerned with Existential Psychiatry - offering pills that can cure the sicknesses of the soul. If religious practices are not of any benefit, they would have died a natural death long ago. They serve a useful function - that of en-lightening the mind and with that FREE a person from ambiguities anguish angst emptiness and meaninglessness and so forth. The mental depression of ordinary life that assails one is incurable by the drugs that induce only a temporary relieve by suppressing the normal consciousness. They provide only an escape and NOT a real cure.

The sources of such depressions are metaphysical and unless there are metaphysical clarities, cure will not be available.

To provide such metaphysical pills is one of the functions of the temple where we have the ICONS installed and worshipped.

But how do they serve to this task of enlightening the soul and with that cure the psychological ailments?

Sambantar explains this beautifully in the verse below.

1.

â

򧾡 ʸ ż

:

Meaning:

Those who are given over to great meditative practices in fact worship and reflect upon the MEANING the various guises (iconic forms) of BEING such those available in the temple of Tiruntu Teevan Kudi. The deep metaphysical illuminations attained serve as medicinal pills that cure the mental and bodily ailments. They also serve as the Mantras that lead to understanding of Njaanam, the Absolute Understanding. They are also the GOOD actions as they promote metaphysical questioning with the desires to UNDERSTAND.

Comments:

BEING has no unique shape or form and remains wholly INDETERMINATE with respect to this. However He presents Himself in various ICONS that are cast into sculptures and idols, installed in the temples and worshipped. These iconic forms are called here adikaL veedaGkaL the various guises BEING wears as if He is an actor or dancer in a drama and which is quite an apt metaphor for understanding how BEING blesses the creatures. These guises and dramas have MEANINGS and its through a process of WORSHIP and deep and persistent hermeneutic reflections that such MEANINGS are wrested out and enjoyed. These illuminations would not be gained just simply by thinking no matter how ardently. They have to WORSHIP he icons and which is a device for installing the IMAGE in the mind firmly and holding it there with REVERENCE. The Icon is BEING Himself and one has to allow oneself to be POSSESSED as during trance-experiences. The Icon thus installed slowly unfolds the secrets and they become the metaphysical illuminations and which by the Lumen Naturale (CiRSakti) they flood the deep corners of the mind drive away the Inner Darkness. This en-lightening function of Icon Thinking is that which makes it Powerful Pills that would cure the sickness of the soul and with that also the body.

Now persistence with Icon Thinking that centers of a FIGURE or Icons, thinking itself dissolves naturally into Mantra Thinking for in the course of deeper forms of Icon Thinking it will be disclosed that BEING configures these ICONS with mantras and they are in fact mantra-complexes. The thinking becomes deeply abstract where now what are meditated upon are mantra-complexes, which bring along with it, the presence of Siva Tatvas Natam and Bindu (Yin & Yang) and how BEING with these Tatvas and mantras configures not only the icons but also everything. It is in the course of such a metaphysical odyssey that the LIMIT of understanding all faultlessly, the Njaanam, is reached.

Now such activities are also the RIGHT kind of actions, the PuNNiyam. For they DO NOT close the mind but in fact promote a life on persistent inquiry, the raising of questions after question and all directed towards UNDERSTANDING (purntu kaLal). The Life of Icon Thinking has an inner dynamics of its own where mental FIXATIONS are disallowed and the mind is kept moving on and thus always creative and productive.

Dear Raymond

Excellent questions - questions that have been in my mind for sometime. Yes

there is resolution of all differnces right at the peak and where the soul

becomes qualitatively the SAME as Pure BEING. This sameness is there in

the bosom of all of us irrespective of race language religon culture and

so forth.Yes also a complementary opposites - the Siva-Sakit Yin-Yang Sun-

Moon An-Ianna and perhaps also the Egyptian amon-aten (Ta, amman-aatan :

mother-father0

Yes there is hierarchical ordering and this because on the way there are

individual differences and which the Saivites understand in terms of threea

defilers - aaNavam Kanmam and Maayai. When a soul is FREE of these then it

is PURE and it can be pure only by proximating BEING who is intrinsically

and ALWAYS pure.

BEING discloses by way of illuminating the soul and so what awaits would

depend on what area of ignorance that needs to be destroyed.

Ego assertion is the disorientation that is cured with metaphysical

illuminations. The self becoming thye egoless self is the cure.

I shall explain these as we go on - there will be about 10 postings in

this series.

One thing I should perhaps mention here is a Copernican Revolution in

Epistemology - the concern is NOT the logical basis of true knowledge but

rather knowledge as the destroyer of pre-existent IGNORANCE. Being full of

ignorance is being at the base of the Pyramid, and climbing up is possible

only be DESTROYING ignorance and hence the importance of PEDAGOGY as a

whole.

The PEAK of the Pyramid is not only pure but also fully illuminated - i.e a

state of NO ignorance.

Dear Raymond

Thanks again for some thought provoking questions which made sit back and collect together the various studies. I refer to your questions below:

>>>>>>>>>

While this is easy enough to envision analogically, the problem

is that it is not the only version. There also existed other accounts

that either varied significantly from this one, or were transparent

attempts to copy or assimilate it. Have you found similar discrepant

formulations in your studies of the Tamil tradition(s)? If so, what

are we to make of them? Clearly there can't be competing "Pyramids"

since that would imply that spiritual truth is relative.

If there are varying accounts of the climb and/or its rationale what

are we to do with them?

>>>>>>>>>>>

First of all even Tamil literature is so vast that the account I give can only be partial but hopefully to the point. As I see it, bulk of the Indian traditions which also find their presence in Tamil literature DENY the metaphysical Pyramid and it is only Saivism that has maintained it firmly and right from Sumerian days (I hope to point this out in another series) In the words of Tirumular you find various interpretations of this Pyramid that are complimentary to each other while in the Vedic and Vedantic traditions it is DENIED also in various ways.

The central truth is quite simple: if there is ascend in the metaphysical pyramid then there must be that which climbs up and what else can it be but the soul? Now if there is a CLIMB there must be something like impedance against which the climb has to be affected and what can it be but the Malam, the Blindness inducing SUBSTANCE and which also is the Killer Energy? And since the soul is BLIND and hence cannot see what lies ahead of itself, there must be something, which gives a vision of what lies ahead and with that gives sense of direction for its movement. And what can it be except BEING who presents Himself as the pyramid and the whole range of gods that populate it? Thus we have the Fundamental Ontology of Pati (BEING) Pacu (the souls) and Paacam - the fetters or defilers like Malam so forth. It also follows that all the diseases of the body and mind are there only because of these defilers and that as the soul climbs up the Pyramid and reaches the Realms of the Pure at the peak begins to enjoy a kind of heavenly existence or at least an existence of the Golden Body - of mental and physical happiness.

Now except for Saivism, all other Indian metaphysical systems DENY or do not propound this Fundamental Ontology. This is quite true of Buddhism and Jainism to varying degrees though some branches of Tantric Buddhism seem to fall in line with it. The different schools of Vedanta have the Fundamental Ontology of only Brahman is real and all else is fiction or shadowy creatures insubstantial and so forth. There are many sub-schools who dispute endlessly about some details.

Now the Samkhyas as in Bagavath Gita come quite close to but fall out in some important details. They explain this ascendance in terms of GuNas - the Satviikam Rajasam and Tamasam and in which they see growth as leaving the lower guNas of Tamasam (the darkness) and Rajasam (aggression etc) and shine forth in Satviikam (gentleness softness etc). But in their ontology there is no way of accommodating the Malam, the Killer Energy that causes the death of the living creatures as well as the whole universe.

Thus you can that bulk of Indian metaphysical systems are disorientating and NOT clarifying.

Now let me describe very briefly the different ways Tirumular (quite exhaustively) has describe the ascendance.

1

In terms of Ecological Thinking where there are existential ecologies, the Atara Cakras - Muulataaram, Swatisdanam, MaNipuurakam, Anakatam, Vicukti, Aknja and Brahma Rantiram. These are hierarchically organized and one cannot move into the higher unless one masters the lower and the highest is the Brahma Rantiram also put as the Realm of the Lotus of Thousand Petals. This is also the location of Amutu, ambrosia and the Siddhas actually locate it in some areas of the Brain. Thus these metaphysical ecologies are actually taping different parts of the brain and living accordingly. The Pyramid is located in the Brain Processes with KuNdalini energy providing the vehicle for accessing these realms. All the gods are encountered in this journey with a cluster of them ordaining a particular Cakra- e.g. the MaNipuurakam that by VishNu (Sumerian Enlil, Se-ir-ma-al)_ and so forth. So the ascendance involves both worshipping a certain cluster of deities and leaving them behind and getting into another cluster. At the LIMIT of ascendance BEING Himself as Man-Woman Complex is encountered.

2.

Now this same odyssey is given a Mantrayana explanation also by Tirumular where the Metaphysical Pyramid is re-interpreted as Tiruvambala Cakkaram, the Cosmic Wheel of Mantras where the different realms are generated by different mantra-complexes. The lower install the lower kinds of life including all the different forms religious life but the most authentic said to be related to the Siva Mantras Na-Ma-Si-Vaa-Ya which leads by an inner dynamics of its own into Si-Vaa-Ya and which in turn to AUM or Om, the Primordial Logos (the Sumerian am, aam etc). BEING is said to disclose His own Authentic Form only with this Siva Mantras.

3

Now another model is that of in terms of the six faces of Cataaciva where the Metaphysical Pyramid (the Kailash) is interpreted in terms of the Polycephalic FACES of BEING - the Vaamateevam, Akooram, Tatpurudam. Satyosaatam, Icaanam with another looking downwards, the Atoomukam. The Vaamateevam installs the sexual desires, the Akooram the kindness and gentility, the Tatpurudam the ego sense and Satyosaatam the desire for metaphysical truths. While the Icaanam makes the self move UPWARDS and finally TRANSCEND even this Pyramid and enjoy Moksa, the Atoomukam does the opposite- it pulls down the self into the lower and because of which issues forth metaphysical struggles.

4.

Now another model is that where he Metaphysical Pyramid is interpreted as the Sivalingkam, which REPLICATES itself and becomes the various STEPS but at cosmic level. For example the SivaliGkam replicates itself as the PiNdaliGkam, the LiGkam that generates the various BODIES of the creatures along with their mental and other organs. We have also ANdaliGkam, where the SivaliGkam is said to replicate itself into that which brings into presence the whole UNIVERSE and gives structure and functions to it. The Njana LiGkam is the replication of SivaliGkam that provides the Realm of MEANINGS and consciousness as such for the creatures. Now Cataaciva LiGkam is BEING Himself present in the Universe as the Six-faced polycephalic BEING and hence the DYNAMICS of the both the physical and metaphysical world.

I believe these are sufficient for the moment but you can see quite clearly that notion of Metaphysical Pyramid has been interpreted and understood in many ways that are actually complimentary to each other.

Dear Loga,

Thank you for your thoughtful response to my questions.

I would like to take advantage of your good graces and

ask one more.

The ancient center of instruction I previously referred to

as "one of the KMTC teachings" is exceedingly old, dating

as far back as the 2nd Dynasty (c. 2890-2686 BC). Its

tradition recognized the existence of a perennial moral/

spiritual/existential crisis among humans which it taught

could be resolved by the journey to the summit you have

described. This crisis, would have been located at the base

of the "Pyramid" in the model you described. The center

terraces (I see this as a step-pyramid) would constitute a

kind of "ladder" reaching from earth (symbolically) through

the air, into the sky and toward the solar disk which would

represent enlightenment and completion the journey to the

summit.

The Icons Disclose Truths even Beyond Scriptures

The Hermeneutic philosophers of the West like Heidegger Gadamer and so forth while pointing out that understanding is linguistical, have failed to point out that there are post-linguistical forms of metaphysical understanding where deep insights are gained through Icon Thinking and which in its turn lead the mind into the higher Mantra Thinking already contained in some rudimentary form in Shamanism. Thus we can say that the whole of the West still remains BLIND to metaphysical truths that Icon Thinking can afford an individual. This may explain why Temple Worship, already so well developed in Sumerian times itself, continues to this day at least among the Dravidian folks and this despite the attacks on it by Vedism Buddhism (of the non-Tantric variety) Jainism and so forth. After a temporary relapse and lose, it re-asserted itself during the Bakti Period (5th- 9th cent AD) with a new depth of understanding where astute but dry and soul suffocating logical and linguistic thinking was displaced by the Icon Thinking such as that as Punitavati Poykai Azwar and so forth and which is RECOVERY of the Icon Thinking of the Sumerians such as En Hudu Anna and so forth.

They saw that deep and interrogative engagements with the Icons worshiped, seeking the MEANINGS they hide within their form and functions helped them to gain metaphysical insights that were not possible by an ardent study of scriptures.

The icons they worship so ardently install themselves in the deepest layers of the mind, and remaining there slowly unfold deep metaphysical TRUTHS through modifying not only thinking as such but also more fundamentally the SEEING itself. The eyes are OPENED up further and with that what were beyond the vision before now come into the vision. The BLINDNESS is destroyed with more illuminations of the most meaningful sort and which is curative in their effect. The karmas and such other defilers within are destroyed just like sunlight destroys the prevailing darkness.

The curative effect of the metaphysical illuminations is certainly one of the reasons why temple culture continues as the earliest and the most enduring aspect of religious life.

BEING has no beginnings and end but a POWER unto Himself as He can withdraw His presence and re-issue it i.e. cause His death and rebirth. Such a BEING wears many guises to illuminate the mind of the ignorant creatures and sits in the pure temple of Tiru Teevan Kudi in various Icon Forms. Those who meditate upon them and wrest out the MEANINGS hidden there will not be driven to the streets to beg for metaphysical wisdom. In addition to that they will be CURED by being freed of the karmas that are the sources of all ailments. But most importantly this semiotic exercises will disclose TRUTHS that are beyond the ardent and deep studies of the scriptures.

Comments:

The most important phrase in this verse is ooti oorkkappadaa poruLai oorvippana and which means that Icon Thinking discloses truths that are impossible to gain by deep studies of scriptures. Sambantar was born a Vedic Brahmin and so this is very significant in pointing out he departed from Vedism for it is Vedism in India that claimed that only the studies of the Vedas and performing the rituals recommended there, are efficacious in purifying the souls of the karmas, the source of all evils.

Sambantar destroys this believe that indirectly sought to displace temple worship and along with it the metaphysical disciplines of Icon Thinking, Hermeneutic Semiotics and so forth with Yajnas and recital of Vedic Slokas. It is NOT an accident that Vedci and Vedantic traditions do not promote Icon thinking and so forth. BEING is BEYOND language for anything linguistic is ephemeral - they will die out unless maintained by a tradition of chanters and which is NOT true of Njanam, the Supreme Illumination that readies the soul for the final redemption of Moksa.

While in a way this also applies to ICON THINKING as well but it evolves into Mantra Thinking that is FREE of any figural thinking including the iconic. Within the IMAGE of these icons there are TRUTHS which unfold within the contemplative mind and which are BEYOND words and hence scriptures i.e Icon Thinking leads to its own death and rebirth into Mantra Thinking.

The IMAGES of the icon sorts, the Muurtties are not only prelinguistic but also post-linguistic - they contain within themselves TRUTHS that are beyond words. While scriptures trap the mind into words and seek to keep the mind arrested thus, the ICONS promote a further EVOLUTION into non-iconic mantra thinking. Thus it is not an accident that it is within Hermeneutic Semiotics that Mantra Thinking also developed and baktas like Sambantar Appar and so forth also sang many beautiful Mantra Hymns.

The Metatheism of Sambantar-3

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

Ө 3:25 :

Metatheism versus Monotheism

Metatheism founds metaphysical life that is immensely rational where the science of Hermeneutic Semiotics, the essential component of Icon thinking, constitutes the essence. What we have is a single BEING with no definite Iconic of His own but who configures countless number of icons but all only to illuminate the mind of creatures. Monotheism destroys this science by allowing only BEING as the Supreme God but vehemently disallowing the ICONS and their worship and hence Icon Thinking, Hermeneutic Semiotics and so forth. Thus religious life is made simply one of Blind belief and Faith where LEARNING truths and ascending the metaphysical Pyramid is disallowed. Monotheism does not allow LEARNING in small measures metaphysical truths and each person in his/her own way and with that CLIMB the metaphysical pyramid. With this blindness an IRATIONALITY comes to prevail with INTOLERANCE towards Iconic Thinking and so forth . The Scripture is elevated to most authoritative position more as a Wish Fulfillment that a rational conclusion. Actually this is replacing the figural icons with word-icons that are called scriptures with the accompanying assumptions that Metaphysical Understanding is linguistical. They fail to recognize what Sambantar pointed out in verse 2 above that Icons encrypt truths beyond words.

Languages have their own limitations and the truths possible with the linguistic scriptures trap the mind disallowing the emergence of the Mantra-world and with that also the metaphysical realms that uproot even mantras and allow only a Deep Silence as the language of Supreme Illumination, the Njaanam ( the African and Sumerian Ngaa> Ta. njaal, njaan)

Sambantar points out with unusual penetration into the depths of Logical Thinking itself that the MEASURES that tell us what are truth-experiences and what are not, become available within Hermeneutic Semiotics itself. Such a Metaphysical Science is also immensely rational and scientific but only that the MEASURES of TRUTH are not created by the thinking mind of man. They emerge as the blessings from within the exercise of hermeneutic semiotics ensuring the metaphysical mind is NOT led astray into wrong and false ways.

BEING who has no definite form of His own plays however the FIVE great icon forms of Brahma Vishnu Iican Cataaciva and Siva in order illuminate the mind of people with deep metaphysical truths. Such a BEING has on His own accord has come to establish Himself in the Temple of Tirut Tevan Kudi where abound the honey of divine wisdom with people singing hymns like honey bees. Now those who meditate upon these Icon forms will have the logical measures that establish truths as truths emerge in their mind. The truth-experiences these measures provide also guide them in their metaphysical odyssey so that they are always in the right direction.

Comments:

The Metaphysical Life as founded by Hermeneutic Semiotics is an immensely RATIONAL life where there are MEASURES (maanam or piramaaNam) that allow the differentiation of truth-experiences from the false. The notion of truth-experience is not the same as logical truth such as that in Aristotelian logic or even that of the Naiyayikas in India. The truth-experince is primordial and there is something within that experince itself that tells us that what is experienced is a truth and not a falsity. There are MEASURES within such experiences that tell the experiencer that what he is experiencing are not delusions illusions distortions falsities and so forth. The experince of LIGHT tells us from within itself the truth that DARKNESS is dispelled.

Now Sambantar poses the question: From where do these MEASURES emerge and become the organon of the metaphysical Thinking?

He locates it in the Icon Thinking of the devout who hold the Great Deities with reverence and seek to comprehend the Metaphysical Truths encrypted into their form and function. As the mind seek to wrest out the truths buried and hidden in such Deep Images, slowly but with the Grace of BEING, many metaphysical truths unfold along with measures that tell one whether one is in truth or not. The exercise is one of hermeneutic semiotics where there are INTERPRETATIONS of the human mind and which makes possible ERRORS in the interpretive understanding. It is here that the MEASURES, the Maanam emerge and TELL the subject from within whether he is enjoying a truth-experince or not.

Now what is the PURPOSE of such rational excursions into the metaphysical depths?

The metaphysical illuminations that come along with the truth-experiences are that which allow the CLIMB into the Metaphysical Pyramid. It is through the science of Hermeneutic Semiotics that one can CLIMB and reach the Peak of the Metaphysical Pyramid for truth-experiences are the stepping upwards while all other kinds of movements of the mind are FALLING downwards in this strenuous climb. Thus truth-experiences become also that which shows the WAY, the way towards the PEAK.

The Metatheism of Sambantar-4

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

Metatheism Ascendance and the Visions of Truth and Beauty

The Metatheism BEAUTIFIES the soul by making it possible the experience of truths and beauties that are already there but not accessed normally. This also constitutes an ASCENDANCE, the climbing up towards the higher metaphysical realm that is PURE and where the deities reside. This is the celestial world, the Sumerian Paradise that is Pure and where only LOVE pervades. Even the aggressive lions and tigers stay there as tame. Even the old men and women live without any diseases and with youthful vitality.

Now the enemies of this Metatheism are both Monotheism and Polytheism and both of which are Ugly, Dirty and Filthy. Only the impure minds that are atomic and tribal can be happy with monotheism and polytheism. Both are products of atomic minds and celebrate tribalism rather than universalism. This mind-set also leads to AGGRESSION where killing fellow human beings is NOT seen as an evil. Monotheism is a FIXATION towards ONE icon with HATRED towards all the others. Where there is such deep-seated hatred, there cannot be genuine CARE and LOVE. Polytheism is a tribal mind that tribalizes even the celestial world by being BLIND to the fact all deities are just different presentational forms of the ONE and SAME BEING and creates various kinds of cults. The polytheists of such cults cannot see the underlying oneness and hence become religious tribes of various kinds by remaining the captives of this or that deity and incessantly fighting among themselves vain and meaningless battles.

Sambantar in this verse brings out magnificently how the life of Metatheism really cools the ears, the eyes and mind and all with FREEING the mind from such tendencies and transporting the soul into the celestial world, the Paradise.

Also the immense range of deep illuminations makes the person a njaani and burst out into singing hymns of outstanding metaphysical depths. And as the contemplation of these icons continue , it furnishes more and more of pure icons of immense beauty and the eyes enjoy an aesthetic feasts that cools them.

Comments:

Sambantar brings out the depth psychological implications of genuine Metatheism that centers on Icon Thinking and the exercise of Hermeneutic Semiotics. BEING takes various guises which emerge as the Muurtties or Icons that capture the human mind and make them not only worship but also reflective hermeneutically to gain metaphysical illuminations impossible otherwise. Such reflections also lead to dissolutions of the figural character of the icons and alert the mind also the Mantra basis of them. The icons are the visual forms of mantra-complexes that have also a SOUND shape. Now this SOUND shape of icons may ring out tones of musical beauty fulfilling the thirst of the ears for hearing aesthetically stimulating musical notes.

Now the hermeneutic semiotics is an immensely SCIENTIFIC endeavor where only TRUTHS are sought after ensuring that the mind is not trapped in any kind of falsities and fancies. The hermeneutic scientific mind is inherently deconstructive - it is brave enough to self-destroy so that the false-self is killed and only the sat-self the true-self is allowed to survive and continue its journey. Thus the TRUTHS that become available in the truth-experiences stick to the soul as its permanent and inalienable possession. Such truth-experiences are also those which allow and promote the CLIMB, the ASCENDANCE, reaching greater heights of the Pyramid or what is the same greater DEPTHS of the metaphysical world and hence closer to the Absolute Illumination, the Njaanam that lights up everything eliminating all doubts and uncertainties. Thus the person becomes a Njaani, one who understands the Njaanam and which makes him burst out into SINGING hymns by way of communicating even to self such deep and immensely precious metaphysical insights.

Another important feature pertains to AESTHETICS, the experience of BEAUTY that pleases the hungry eyes. The Icons are beautiful and immersing in the semiotics of such icons furnishes more and more such icons- deities male and female and all immensely beautiful. Thus the eyes enjoy feasts after feasts that really COOL the eyes.

The Metatheism of Sambantar-5

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

Metatheism is the Way to Moksa

Metatheism, while it definitely involves the worship of many deities, hierarchically organized, but there a SINGLE unifying theme - that of SEEKING MOKSA and organizing EXISTENCE as if for Moksa. This distinguishes it both form Polytheism that does not recognize the underlying UNITY and Monotheism that does not for LEARNING step by step by the worship of a pyramid of gods. For such people life for the most part remains inauthentic, lost in vain pursuits and useless struggles and all because of metaphysical ignorance. The notion of Moksa and the understanding that the MEANING of Life is to attain and enjoy Moksa dawns very late and the genuine religious life is that component of life as whole that alerts the soul about this. This is genuine religion while all else are false and misleading.

Reaching the PEAK of the metaphysical PYRAMID and then going beyond that and Be-with-BEING forever is the genuine Moksa and hence a life already well within the metaphysical pyramid is the most authentic life. Anyone who leads a life founded by this Pyramid or Kailash or SivaliGkam is already leading an authentic life even though there may be DIFFERENCES in the steps they have climbed and the gods they have encountered. The unifying theme is that the hold of these ICONS will pass and the soul will seek to be with BEING only and who is beyond any icon determination. The icon indeterminacy provides the fluidity and impulse to move on and destroy any intermediate FIXATIONS. There is a dimension of ICON TRANSCENDANCE, a perpetual FLUIDITY and NON-FIXATION and hence non-cultic and which accounts for the TOLERANCE of the metatheistic individuals.

They come to have a personality of OPENNESS like that of the Saivites who also talk of Camayaatiitam, the transcendence of religions and because they have the attitude of Let It Be, let any man worship any god that he likes for soon or later he will go beyond from the present cultic madness.

A Culture or Civilization that is essentially metatheistic is essentially a tolerant culture, that which does NOT seek converts at any cost and the Pyramidal Cultures of the world are essentially this though in many counties overlaid and submerged by Montotheism.

Because of IGNORANCE or blindness these malams cause to prevail, the creatures are forced to assume a physical body and come to birth in the physical world and endure existence. Now the Icon Thinking cantering on the various guises taken by BEING who has established Himself sitting on the Great Bull in the Tirut Teevan Kudi where the Woman touches it as the Full Moon of pure light, will lead the souls by the metaphysical clarity they bring, to enjoy not only the heavenly existence but also understand the true meaning of Moksa.

Comments:

Metatheism is directed towards the attainment of Moksa and which is understood bas uprooting the propensities to assume a physical body and with that come into circulation into the phenomenal world. This meaning of Moksa is very ancient, as ancient as Suruppaks NeRi(c. 3000 BC) where it was articulated metaphorically as swimming across the turbulent river of life, a metaphor almost the same as in TirukkuRaL (c. 200 AD), the PiRavi peruGkadal niintal: swimming across the sea of life.

This meaning of Moksa and hence founding AUTHENTIC Life as that which is directed towards such a Moksa remains an UNCONSCIOUS in the soul and hence something the soul is IGNORANT or confused about (mayakkam) This metaphysical IGNORANCE is the primordial cause that underlies the assumption of a physical body and entering the existential world, the sea or turbulent river of life. The mayakkam, or Ignorance is there only because of the Primordial aaNavam that introduces the primordial BLINDNESS, the inability to SEE anything at all and hence enjoy consciousness. The secondary defilers of Kanmam and Maayeeyam come to prevail this phenomenal circulation throwing the souls into embodied existence. There is consciousness but only as that which unclear.

Sambantar contends that only MEATATHEISM can FREE the soul from this and allow the genuine heavenly life and with also organize oneself as for Moksa and so forth. But how?

When Icon Thinking is entered into and the metaphysical truths wrested out, there are metaphysical illuminations that are truths and which allow the inflow of Lumen Naturale and which destroys the hold of aaNavam, the primordial defiler. When the hold of aaNavam is weakened thus, so will be Karma and Maayeeyam. It is the Maayeeyam that makes the souls attach themselves with a physical body and hence the physical world. When this hold is weakened and the soul is enabled to detach itself from the physical body, it enters the metaphysical realms and with a form of life with the gods, the celestial beings and hence heavenly while still on earth. The gods appear as higher and higher kinds of ICONS, the Great Ones of which inform the soul the real meaning Moksa and with that help the souls enjoy the Most Authentic Life.

Subject: [Ta_Seti] The Metatheism of Sambantar-5

Greetings Loga,

I continue to enjoy your postings on the metaphysical pyramid

as revealed in Tamil and Sumerian writings. It was interesting

to read of the associations made between various deities and forms

of sexuality as well as their relation to different types of land formations.

I was also struck that the lineage of deities, and the fall from purity,

were thought of as having resulted from a series of primordial

effluxes or emanations. It reminded me frankly speaking of the image

of the masturbating creator deity found in the Kmtc creation story I

have been using for comparison with the traditions of Kmt. This is of

course metaphor.

Let me see if I have this right. In order of appearance you say we

have Muruka, Indra, Vishnu, Varuna and Paalai. Furthermore, they

are respectively symbolized by the luxuriant hill, the cultivated land,

pastoral grounds, a seascape, and a brilliant sunlit desert. Now, here's

my question: If we take the sun as signifying pure being, shouldn't this

sequence be turned upside down? Shouldn't Paalai come first

and the others subsequently as emanations, so to speak? Or is this not

like the Kmtc emphasis on the sun deity (Tem or Re) as symbols of

Totality?

I also wondered at the use of the word "metatheism" to describe this kind

of thinking. It seems to be rather abstract given the referents used;

these appear to be very grounded or earth-centered. Is there more that

can be said about the value of beginning with the images presented in the

writings rather than trying to understand the text through a more abstract

lense? Do the Tamil writers say anything about this? Did they prefer to

speak to the abstract through the concrete image? By the way, why the

emphasis on land? In what kind of natural setting where the primary

texts written?

Let me confess that your reference to written scripture "freezing the mind"

made me cringe. I have found the written word to be liberating when used

in conjunction with icon concentration, sacred utterances (HXAw) and daily

ritual, especially if combined with appropriate anaerobic exercise. They

seem to reinforce each other. Perhaps this is so because the Mdw NTr

(heiroglyphs) are themselves iconographic as well as lexical. Perhaps it is

because the resulting utterances are often poetic and rhythmical. Beyond

this I tend to feel uneasy about any suggestion that places the written word

in a poor light given the importance of reading to the educational advance-

ment of us all. I'm sure you did not intend by your comments to do this. It

is "ground" on which we should tred with great care. Don't you agree?

In peace,

Raymond

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

Metatheism is the Way to Moksa

The Scriptures are Word Icons.

The descriptive term metatheism (that I have introduced in English) is short for metaphysical life as centered on the hermeneutic semiotics of innumerable icons that are the presentation forms of one and the same BEING and which are hierarchically organized. This notion was rendered by Tamil word Camayam and which is a variant of Simayam- reaching the peak of the metaphysical pyramid, the Kailash. In Sumerian it was rendered as in-da-sim (Sulgi Hymn B, c. 2000 BC) and I believe it was a very early articulation of the notion of religion already IMPLICIT in the pyro cultures of the Nubians-Egyptians-Sumerians and perhaps also the pyramidal cultures in the Far East and the Americas. The temple-centered Hinduism throughout India and particularly among the Dravidians who continue to erect pyramidal temples to this day, is metatheistic and hence neither monotheistic (like Islam) nor polytheistic. Central to Metatheism is that while BEING shows Himself in many icon forms that are hierarchically organized, He is always BEYOND and ABOVE and to understand which one has to transcend even Icon Thinking. Tirmular- c. 7th cent AD) declares in the first verse of his massive Tirumantiram onRavan Taanee ( BEING is One) and elsewhere onRee kulamum oruveenet teevanum ( Being is the Same for all and all people belong to one and the same community)

Now Sambantar in addition to saying such a life of Icon Thinking is truly PURIFYING and hence that which makes the very CONDUCT itself praiseworthy, also says by way of denying the Vedic claim that Vedas are Suyambu, autonomous and hence something that is NOT a product of BEING, mentiones that the Vedas (all sciptures) are disclosures of the same BEING.

Just as the iconic IMAGE forms of BEING are numerous, so are the scriptures- they are Word-Icons of BEING and hence NOT at all Suyambu. And the positive and negative aspects of Icons apply here. The human mind must NOT allow itself to be FIXATED to any particular icon form - it must reflect, wrest out the truths encrypted in them and move on to a higher icons and so forth. The same applies to scriptures- we should NOT allow the mind to be fixated by a single scripture and with that become religious in the Christian, Islamic sense. Having gained as much as possible in terms of metaphysical truths, we must move on to the mantra-languages and later to the Primordial Logos Om itself and at which point the Supreme Illumination, the Njaanam (The Ngaa is East Africa) is enjoyed in Deep Silence.

BEING who has disclosed the Vedas along with the six sciences and arts related to understanding them (and such other scriptural texts) has installed Himself in this Temple of Tirut Teevan Kudi surrounded by a Garden kissed by the Full moon. He has assumed innumerable guises to inform the creatures of metaphysical truths and those who contemplate hermeneutically on these and enjoy the metaphysical illuminations will enjoy a way of life where the actions effected will NOT be considered evil and ignoble but rather great and uplifting the soul and hence immensely praiseworthy.

Comments:

There are two main points mentioned by Sambantar here by way of elucidating more on Metatheistic Religious way of Life. One is that he denies that Vedas are Suyambu, something that has come to be there on its own and hence without having the BEING as its causal ground. Here as elsewhere Sambantar denies this emphatically and says that not only the Vedas but also the six ancillary disciplines are disclosures of BEING. Since he also says elsewhere that the Agamas are as such we can see that ALL scriptures are ultimately productions of BEING just ads are the innumerable icons.

Thus all such scriptures are Word-Icons and in principle can be countless in number and always in production. There cannot be a UNIQUE and ONLY ONE scripture as there cannot be only one and a unique Icon Form of BEING. BEING is INDETERMINATE with respect scriptural disclosures just as He is wholly INDETERMINATE with respect to Icon Form.

Now the second point Sambantar mentions here is that it is Icon thinking that is truly PURIFYING and hence that activity that transmutes the soul and make the CONDUCT truly praiseworthy, something that would serve as MODEL for the lesser souls to emulate. It is NOT adherence to certain values as enunciated by some scriptures or messiahs that ensure that actions are praiseworthy but rather the Inner Purity of the soul and which is possible only by gaining metaphysical illuminations and which are possible only through hermeneutic reflections on the icons. The ethical values just as measures of truth are forever CHANGING and only when we allow for the inherent FLUIDITY of these values can we ascend higher and with that become purer. The Inner Purity is deeper than value fixated mental states and only the BRAVE will forever self-destroy the existing values and replace them with something HIGHER and with that become purer. This is facilitated by a hierarchically organized presentation of Icons where at the peak of the Pyramid we have the highest.

BEING provides a FEEDBACK as to the correctness of the WAY by making the right actions become truly praiseworthy.

The Metatheism of Sambantar-7

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

Metatheism and Immortality

The metatheism promotes a life of spiritual development and which consists in climbing up the metaphysical pyramid. Now one of the conditions for reaching the top is giving up all ties, unpacking from one the various loads one carries with oneself in terms of various worldly desires and goals. Metaphorically one must be clad only with a loincloth and that of Pure White.

The struggle to climb upwards is actually taming the sexual libido and transmuting it into GRACE, Pure Love and which cannot materialize unless the EGO is killed. It is this ego killing that is NOT possible for majority of men for it is almost self-destruction. Out of a deep metaphysical FEAR they COVER themselves with rich and pompous cloths like the kings and such other political figures and which are actually various of fancies and fantasies (like the Aryanism of the Europeans and Bramins who ape them) . But this is false security for there will come a time when none of these will be with the person. If they do not lose in some social upheavals or personal conversions, there is always DEATH, which denudes them of all. Such men FEAR death only because of loads of attachments and the thought of DEATH will be extremely painful and would make them cry sob lament and so forth

The metaphysical hero is NOT such a person but rather one who has achieved true Purity and Freedom and hence would remain UNAFFECTED by all these worldly garments and will be quite happy only with a white loincloth, speaking metaphorically here and effectively with a NOTHINGNESS.

This is the PEAK of the metaphysical pyramid and such people because of the inner purity they have achieved will also speak in a PURE language of LOVE and CARE and through that achieve true immortality. Such people because truly objective and fair, articulate a language that becomes not only endearing to all but also naturally uplifting. They speak from the Peak of the Pyramid, and with that they also motivate others to climb up and reach the top.

BEING who appears as the mendicant wearing only white loincloth showing the shape of one who has conquered sexuality and has installed Himself in the Temple of Tevankudi where flow a river full of waves. Now those who contemplate hermeneutically on the various guises this BEING takes and wrest out the metaphysical truths that remain encrypted there, will have no moments in their life where they will cry out of unbearable pains and in their speech too there will with nothing defective and unsavory. They will also become immortal - long remembered even after their death.

Comments:

BEING presents Himself in innumerable shapes and the one singled out for special mention here is that of mendicant who wears only the loincloth. While there are many shapes that stimulate sexuality, here we have Siva as an ascetic and who wears the WHITE loincloth to indicate the inner PURITY. In a way to be genuinely PURE and FREE is to have transmuted the sexual libido into that of GRACE, Pure Love.

But what is the special significance of this semiotic exercise in relation to the general hermeneutic semiotics where the different shapes or guises of BEING are contemplated with a desire to wrest out the metaphysical truths?

For the PURE and FREE as such, there are NO existential anguish excruciating pains and miseries that drive them into crying contemplation of suicides and such other behaviors. They remain detached like the dews of water on a lotus leaf- in the world and in the thick of events but as an observer more than a participant. They are NOT actors but rather detached observers. They are free of EGO and hence manage to SEE even what happens to them OBJECTIVELY, impersonally and hence unaffected emotionally.

This inner Purity also makes them SPEAK a language that is NOT DEFECTIVE in terms prejudices, evil designs, cunningness and so forth. As they shine forth in TRUTH, there are fancies and fantasies. The inner purity also leads them to manage themselves with a language of purity itself.

The Metatheism of Sambantar-8

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

BEING Destroys the Tyrants and the Terrorists

Metatheism comes also along with a HISTORIOGRAPHY such as that of the Sumerians where every historical event is seen as the Play of BEING and for which purpose He assumes various Veedam, guises as an actor would in a drama. Thus the natural events are NOT purely physical, meaningless motions of atoms molecules or even genes and so forth that somehow assume a pattern and order. As the dynamical force and Deep Structure behind all these natural and historical events stands BEING but always in a certain GUISE that we intuit as icons and worship as the deities by installing them in the temples.

BEING is wholly GOOD and whatever He does is for the HAPPINESS of the people and which is the meaning of KonRai flowers that he wears on His head. But this does not mean that he is NOT destructive- He is immensely destructive but what He destroys are the aggressors and terrorists of all shapes who out of an immense arrogance and egotism would challenge even the presence of BEING, like RavaNa of Ramayana. Such tyrants unleash tyranny and terrorism designed to FRIGHTEN people into unquestioning submission and all done only by IGNORING and FORGETTING the presence of BEING as the real Lord and the Supreme Power.

BEING-As- Siva-the-Destroyer has an army of goblins and ghosts and enacts dramas in which these tyrannical individuals are not alone deprived all of their strength through diseases and so forth but also driven to suffer excruciating pains that makes the bleat and cry.

The Metaphysical Pyramid is the Kailash, the abode of Siva-Sakti (the Sumerian An-Inanna, the Egyptian Amon-Ra and the Nubian Ammon-Aten etc) and any arrogant tyrant who seeks to upset this pyramid and thus destroy the genuine metaphysical life are sure to be destroyed by BEING Himself. The tyrannical individuals as tyrants cannot enter the metaphysical Pyramid, also known the Golden Meru because of this. While the Golden Meru is visible for the celestial beings but is INVISIBLE for the arakkarkaL, the tyrannical individuals.

He has an army of goblins and ghosts and destroys by pervading over the tyrannical individuals who unleash terrorism upon the poor people that make them suffer immensely. Anyone who contemplates on the guises of BEING and that He plays even destructive games will be comforted in learning that BEING is there to destroy the tyrants.

Comments:

History is full of tyrannical individuals who usurp political power and who with that unleash terrorism to bring the whole nation under their control so that they can shape in accordance with their own ideology. Such a political action is possible only the presence of BEING in the form of deities is DESTROYED and so they promote a kind of atheism as the first step in such aggression over people. Their CONSCIENCE becomes NUMB towards killings and murder including ethnic cleansing mass murder and ruthless slaughter. History also shows that all such individuals meet with inglorious death and where people hate and despise them so that they are NOT recorded in History as HEROES but rather as TYRANTS.

Behind it all is the PLAY of BEING where such tyrants are made powerless and miserable by the Destructive Games He plays creating an army of ghosts and goblins for this purpose. The Saivites celibrate the DANCE Siva dances in the Burning Grounds in the company of ghosts and goblins and in the middle of the night. However gruesome this DANCE may appear to be on the surface, those who understands the semiotics of such guises of BEING will know that it is all for the GOOD of the people and will continue to life happily with a certainty that BEING is there to care of them and protect them from such tyrants.

The Metatheism of Sambantar-9

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

Metatheism Promotes Metaphysical Pedagogy

There is already a NATURAL Pedagogy at work in the world and Metatheism accommodates itself to it. This pedagogy at the lower level remains physical then it becomes psychological and finally metaphysical. It is at the level of metaphysical that Icon Thinking and which promotes Hermeneutic Semiotics that metaphysical learning takes place. Monotheism DESTROYS this natural pedagogy by fixating the mind to a messiah or a scripture or a cult woven around such elements. What happens in such ego-appropriation is the backgrounding of the pre-existent natural pedagogy where BEING is the Guru, the professor. The EGO of a single man or the collective ego of the followers comes to dominate submerging the WAY, which is the Way of BEING Himself.

The Monotheists kill the vision of man towards this WAY by destroying worship to the various guises BEING takes the hermeneutic reflections on which furnish the mind with metaphysical illuminations that cannot be gained otherwise.

Polytheism also perpetuates BLINDNESS for while they see the icons they do not see that as DS of all this uncountable number of icons remains the SAME BEING and that all these icons are only guises BEING assumes in His Play designed to INSTRUCT the creatures. Thus polytheism promotes only worship but NOT learning and frequently fascinating the mind and fixating it to a particular icon or a family of icons with which comes a cult along with fanaticism

Metatheism stands clear of these distortions by maintaining the PEDAGOGICAL aspects firmly entrenched in its metaphysical life so that there is OPENESS towards all but with a unifying theme of seeking out TRUTH and avoid falsity

To destroy the arrogance of Brahma and VishNu who claimed that they can reach the top and bottom-most limits of BEING, assumed the shapes of a Swan and a Boar and flew up and gored down to reach the ends points of the Infinite Flame that BEING assumed. They were defeated and failed to reach the upper and lower limits of this Flame. Such a BEING has taken residence in this temple of Tirut Teevan Kudi where people throng like bees with insatiable desire to enjoy the honey of metaphysical wisdom. The various guises BEING takes are not only indestructible but also PURE and which destroying the darkness within the souls also purifies them making them CLEAN as well. This is done by the CLARITY in understanding that they facilitate.

Comments:

Metatheism has a language of its own and hence we have to INTERPRETE appropriately to understand what is communicated without bringing a foreign kind of logic. The mythology of Infinite Flame that defeats both Brahma and Vishnu encrypts a message where it is communicated that BEING remains wholly MYSTERIOUS and that even the great gods like Brahma and Vishnu cannot fathom the limits. We can understand His presence but not wholly what He is.

The icon of Brahma who rides on the Swan stands for scriptures and the understanding that one can gain through exegetical studies. VishNu with his Avatar of the fierce BOAR with which he gores down below stands for the explorations of the fragile human mind into the Unconscious. The meaning of the myth is that neither scriptural exegetics nor delving into ones own unconscious can afford us a FULL understanding of BEING for simply that BEING remains always a SURPLUS, each time the human mind concludes that a full understanding has been reached there bursts an Icon, totally novel and puzzling.

This explains why the various guises BEING can take are there indestructibly. The fanatical mind with its iconoclasm can create a cult of HATRED towards the icons and destroy the idols signifying them and create a place of worship of EMPTINESS. But this is only a LOCAL phenomenon - the guises may be withdrawn for a while but then they reappear as if by magic in some other form where the figural aspects may be absent.

But is there a MEANING for this indestructibility of the icons?

Certainly there are. They are processes that belong to a NATURAL Metaphysical Pedagogy where by promoting Hermeneutic Semiotics, the mind of man is ILLUMINATED with metaphysical TRUTHS that destroy the DARKNESS of IGNORANCE, the anjnana iruL and with that CLEANSE the souls of all the filth and dirt that make them evil and ugly

The Metatheism of Sambantar-10

Tevarat TirumuRai 3:25 Tiruntu Tevan Kudi

š Ө 3:25 :

It is Icon Thinking that Cures the Soul

Metatheism has as its APPLICATION Icon Thinking and hence the worship of icons either at home in prayer chambers of ones own or installed as deities in the great temples or little shrines. The various representations of the GUISES of BEING in stone bronze and so forth is only a help for reaching the deities who are abstract and which are really mantra-bodies, realities that can exist independent of any graphic representations. They are magical in that they can capture the mind of individuals and possessing the soul thus can DIRECT all the mental and physical activities as desired by itself.

Icon Thinking is an expression of such a possession where the thinking of the person is channeled in the direction of metaphysical truths and hence AWAY from the physical and so forth. This is an act of LOVE of BEING for it is in the course of such thinking that truth-experiences are gained and the interior of the soul flooded more and more with Lumen Naturale. Thus persistence in Icon Thinking is also therapeutic in a way as the Darkness of Ignorance and other evil deposits are dislodged from the soul and thus the soul made Pure and Beautiful

It is this understanding and recovery of Metatheism that really defeated the ancient Buddhists and Jains in the Tamil country first and later all over India and who avoiding Icon Thinking promoted the worship deified kings.

The point of it is that any religion that disallows Icon Thinking will not serve to cure the soul by cleansing it. On the contrary not only it will perpetuate Ignorance but also keep on adding it by directing the people to the WRONG kind of actions. There will lead to fanaticism all over resulting in battles and wars where millions die.

One of the fundamental principles of metatheism that is axiomatic is that truth-experiences because of the Lumen Naturale that flows into the soul at such experiences are CURATIVE both the sickness of the soul as well as the body. The sources all kinds of sickness is the DIRT and FILTH already there in the deeper layers of the mind as the unconscious and hence not reachable by any physical means. No amount of herbs and chemical pills can reach the Unconscious and CLEANSE the karmic deposits already there and which erupts into the mind and body causing all kinds of psychological trauma and physical ailments. The cure lies in CLEANSING these depth and only truth-experiences of the metaphysical sort can be efficacious in such cleansing and hence a justification for the metaphysical way of life centering on Icon Thinking.

Metatheism promotes Icon Thinking for it is in the course of such a kind of Thinking that metaphysical truths are wrested and the normal experiences transmuted into truth-experiences, the soul basking in Clear Light and at the same time flooding the interior with Lumen Naturale, the CiRsakti, that cleanses the soul by dispelling the karmic deposits as light would dispel the darkness.

Now the Buddhists and Jains of his time worshipped the majestic figures of Gautama Buddha and the Tirtangkaras and who were deified kings. They seem to have also promoted the deification of the kings. Now since these are NOT divine or guises taken by BEING as part of His Play, Sambantar points out that it is NOT Icon Thinking and hence cannot be efficacious in earning truth-experiences and Lumen Naturale only which is really curative.

Metatheism and the Deconstruction of Brahmanism

The Brahmanism which seems to have re-emerged as Hindutva now is a cult of HATRED where a individual is transmuted not into a seeker of TRUTH but rather a missionary who will bring the whole world under the dominance of the Vedas and Sanskrit language. This trend of poisonous thinking seems to have begun with the Baddaacariyas who elevated the Vedas as Suyambu and hence the ONLY authoritative scripture that would ensure moksa to the individuals. Following the words of AruNandi we also learn that around the 13th cent and in the South of India, it also led to what can be called the Brahmin-Aryanism, the views that only the three higher castes of Brahmins Ksattriyas and Vaisyas are Aryas and only they can recite the Vedas and listen to their recitations and so forth. The Sudras were EXCLUDED. This is not racialism but a cultural barbarism that was combated very severely by all leading Tamil baktas Philosophers and Siddhas converting in this onslaught many Vedic Brahmins as well. CaNdiisa Nayanar is one of the earlier of cases. Njanacambantan comes in this line but brilliantly combatant both for Tamil against the Sanskritists and for Saivism against the Jains and Buddhists who were violently opposed to the Vedas.

Metatheism does NOT allow the excluding of any person from the Grace of BEING. It does not also allow any authority other than the authority of TRUTH (and hence BEING). Metatheism purifies the soul and makes it more and more LOVING so that it establishes LOVE as the Way Life. Now any action founded upon LOVE can never be EVIL- even punishing killing and so forth done with LOVE will not count as evil. In the wake of genuine Love for all, there cannot also be discriminations in which there is a kind of spiritual gangsterism where one group of people under the FALSE presuppositions, like one is a Brahmanah by virtue of birth alone, gang up together to set up themselves as leaders of the society whose leadership must be accepted no matter what.

This is also how the present day Hindutva seems to function with an army of Brahmanah missionaries who care a damn for TRUTH and keep on articulating views that are more mental fabrications more than anything else.

All the celestial beings have assembled in this Teevan Kudi as students of Civanjaanam taught by Siva, the God of the gods. I hail from Sikazi, a city of palaces and ponds of divine beauties that spread coolness. (Though born a Vedic Brahman but having discarded that) I cherish the culture of Tamil language and because of which I wish to call myself the Tamil Njanacambantan (Tamil virakan etc). I have sung these ten verses helped by the Grace of Siva and those who approach them with the desire to gain Njanam and sing then with an understanding are sure not to commit any evil and continue to suffer

Tiru Njana Sambantar was born a Vedic Brahman of the famous Kaudilya Gotra but threw away the Vedism such as the Baddaacariyas in favor of Saivism and along with for Tamil language and literature instead of the Sanskrit. This bit of autobiographical information comes in the final verse in many of hymns of Sambantar as if he is out to let it be known very widely and permanently.

It must also be noted that he did NOT throw away Veda recital and Vedic corpus also as useful in the spiritual life of man. This is where he also differs from the Jains and Buddhists of his time where they were totally against the Vedic tradition as a whole and quite irrational at that. This intolerance of Vedas and scriptures in general of the Jains and Buddhists who favored a kind of Logical Positivism which made him combative and compose many War Hymns (which will be taken up for a separate stuffy) to seek the favor of Siva to defeat them in intellectual combats. The successes in these earned him the name Vaatu VenRa Sambantar, (Sambantar who emerged victorious in debates)

What made him the Tamil Njanacambantan is the METATHEISM that is so well entrenched as an integral part of Tamil language and literature where to this day stands TirukkuRaL as the most magnificent expression of it and loved by all irrespective of differences in religions. The Metatheism is also Camayaatiitam, transcendence of religions and becoming Open Pure and Deeply Loving unto all. These qualities promote a Way of Life where every action would be GOOD and something that will serve to AVOID the earning the evil karmic deposits that would bring more and more miseries diseases and pains.

As a Tamil and hence a metatheist Sambantar has sung these magnificent verses on Metatheism and certainly I believe, a proper understanding of them would lead any person into the Right Way and which is the way of Openness and Love.

Essencing Metatheism

I coined the term METATHEISM to describe the underlying philosophy Temple-Centered religious practices that I noted as the central feature of the Sumerians and Dravidians where among the Dravidians it has taken deep roots and which philosophy they have maintained with defeating metaphysical views opposed to that. Now I am indeed pleasantly surprised that the Blacks from Egypt and Africa and the diasporas all over the world feel at home with this metatheism and also see the presence of the same metaphysical insight in the Nubian-Kemetian-Sumerian-Dravidian culture complex. To this newfound cultural unity I am extremely thankful to Raymond who encouraged bravely this departure and discovery of the commonness. Also I am thankful to John C, Asar Imhotep, Dr. Winters, Mahari, Paul Kekal Mansala and others who added substance to this thesis bringing more interesting details. In view of these, I believe the essencing of METATHEISM would serve a useful purpose of providing a theoretical framework for interpreting and understanding the TEXTS of monuments and words of the Nubian and Kemetian in addition to Sumerian and Dravidian. What applies to Sumerian and Dravidian may also apply to Nubian and Kemetians. I also believe this is a UNIVERSAL, a metaphysical understanding already there in the depths of all souls only that it remains still unappropriated but which they can do provided an initial sketch is made available.

Now metatheism comes along with Icon Thinking which involves Hermeneutic Semiotics and which incorporates within itself Hermeneutic Logic. Overall these disciplines belong to Hermeneutic Sciences and hence thoroughly RATIONAL with a rationality that more comprehensive and inclusive than the Western or Aristotelian. Man is NOT just a rational animal but also self-destructive self-regenerative animal and which by that activity also reaches the metaphysical heights and enjoys Moksa.

This essencing is based on that of Tiru Njana Sambantar as articulated in his remarkable Patikam on Tirut Tevan Kudi that I just finished translating and commenting.

The Centrality if Icon Thinking

This is a science, the science of Hermeneutic Semiotics with a logic of its own

These illuminations would not be gained just simply by thinking no matter how ardently. They have to WORSHIP the icons and which is a device for installing the IMAGE in the mind firmly and holding it there with REVERENCE. This en-lightening function of Icon Thinking is instrumental in affording the metaphysical illuminations which are Powerful Pills that would cure the sickness of the soul and with that also the body.

Now persistence with Icon Thinking that centers on a FIGURE or Icon, the THINKING itself dissolves naturally into Mantra Thinking for in the course of deeper forms of Icon Thinking it will be disclosed that BEING configures these ICONS with mantras and they are in fact mantra-complexes. The thinking becomes deeply abstract where now what are meditated upon are mantra-complexes, which bring along with it, the presence of Siva Tatvas Natam and Bindu (Yin & Yang, An-Inanna, Isis-Osiris etc) and how BEING with these Tatvas and mantras configures not only the icons but also everything. It is in the course of such a metaphysical odyssey that the LIMIT of understanding all faultlessly, the Njaanam, is reached.

Now such activities are also the RIGHT kind of actions, the PuNNiyam. For they DO NOT close the mind but in fact promote a life on persistent inquiry, the raising of questions after questions and all directed towards UNDERSTANDING (purintu kaLal). The Life of Icon Thinking has an inner dynamics of its own where mental FIXATIONS are disallowed and the mind is kept moving on and thus always creative and productive. It is a process of self-destruction and self-regeneration and hence something that requires the mentality of a warrior.

Now this process is also immensely LOGICAL and hence Rational. It is a search for truths but by way of truth-experiences that transcends the thinking as such. Aesthetic experince such as in music and dance can also be TRUTH-EXPERINECES beyond THINKING as such

Hermeneutic Logic

Hermeneutic Logic transcends thinking and in that it reaches the Depth Psychological ( or mystical) aspects of human understanding as well. Sambantar, in the following verse, brings out the depth psychological implications of genuine Metatheism that centers on Icon Thinking and the exercise of Hermeneutic Semiotics.

Meaning:

The hermeneutic reflections of the different guises of BEING who has taken residence in this temple of Tirut Teevan Kudi that has a stream running by to the delight of the whole world, are sure to help the ASCENDANCE in the Metaphysical Pyramid of Kailash. When we reflect deep and the mind allowed to be led by inner dynamics of its own, it is led to the world of mantras, which impinge the inner ears making the them enjoy fulfillment. The deep metaphysical TRUTHS that blossom in the odyssey become permanently an organon of the mind and stay there permanently without falling off like the fictions and falsities.

Now the beautification of the soul by CLEANSING of the DIRT that defiles the soul by making it EVIL prepares it not only for Moksa but also while still embodied enjoy a GOLDEN BODY and with that abiding youthful VIRILITY and hence a healthy life. Good health is an experiential assurance of the Metatheism, the RIGHT kind of metaphysics.

Moksa and the Alchemy of the Soul

The metatheism promotes a life of spiritual development and which consists in climbing up the metaphysical pyramid. Now one of the conditions for reaching the top is giving up all ties, unpacking from one the various loads one carries with oneself in terms of various worldly desires and goals. Metaphorically one must be clad only with a loincloth and that of Pure White. This is the primordial condition of enjoying Moksa which FREEDOM from being thrown again and again into embodiment, phenomenal existence. Initially all thinking is Body-Thinking and gradually as one ascends the BODY becomes irrelevant and one escapes being embodied.

The struggle to climb upwards is actually taming the sexual libido and transmuting it into GRACE, Pure Love and which cannot materialize unless the EGO is killed. It is this ego killing that is NOT possible for majority of men for it is almost self-destruction. Out of a deep metaphysical FEAR they COVER themselves with rich and pompous cloths like the kings and such other political figures and which are actually various of fancies and fantasies. But this is false security for there will come a time when none of these will be with the person. If they do not lose in some social upheavals or personal conversions, there is always DEATH, which denudes them of all. Such men FEAR death only because of loads of attachments and the thought of DEATH will be extremely painful and would make them cry sob lament and so forth. But this fear and sadness does not exist if one learns to live with a body but without any attachment to it. This detached bodily existence is possible only when advances in Metatheism. The European cultures where metatheism remains buried deep down their psyche are incapable of Body-Free thinking and judging men in terms of it (and hence racialism)

The metaphysical hero is NOT such a person but rather one who has achieved true Purity and Freedom and hence one who would remain UNAFFECTED by all these worldly garments and will be quite happy only with a white loincloth, speaking metaphorically here and effectively with a NOTHINGNESS.

This is the PEAK of the metaphysical pyramid and such people because of the inner purity they have achieved will also speak in a PURE language of LOVE , CARE and COMPASSION and through that achieve true immortality. Such people because truly objective and fair, articulate a language that becomes not only endearing to all but also naturally uplifting. They speak from the Peak of the Pyramid, and with that they also motivate others to climb up and reach the top.

Now this strenuous climb is impossible, as Tirumular keeps on saying, without KuNdalini Sakti, the psychic energy, which flows in initially as Sexual Libido. For having a continuous supply of this KuNdalini and keep on the immensely energy consuming task of climbing up the Metaphysical Pyramid, a man and woman must live together in LOVE and where sexual union is also enjoyed within such a LOVE
